When AI Should Run on a Machine You Own
Most of the AI a small business uses runs somewhere else. You type into a box, it goes over the internet to a company's computers, and an answer comes back. For most owners that is fine, and it is the cheapest way to start.
For a few businesses it is the wrong setup, and for them the answer is a computer in your own building that does the same job without anything leaving the premises.
Three reasons to keep it in the building
What you handle is private. If your business holds client files, medical records, legal documents, or financial details, sending that to someone else's computers means trusting their promises with your clients' trust. When nothing leaves the building, that question goes away. No agreements to negotiate with a vendor, no wondering which country your data passed through.
You use it all day. Paying per use is cheap when you use it a little and expensive when you use it a lot. A business that runs hundreds of documents a day through it, transcribes every call, or produces reports on a schedule often finds the arithmetic favors owning the machine within a year or two.
You want to decide when things change. Vendors retire tools, change prices, and cap how much you can use. On your own machine you pick what runs, and it keeps running until you decide otherwise.
When it does not make sense
Owning the machine is not free. There is the machine, the setup, and someone who knows what it is doing. A shop that asks a chat tool ten questions a day should keep paying by the month and not think about this again.
